Once again, The Whitlams have excelled themselves with their new album Little Cloud - released on March 18.
The album is a double cd release, with songs that tell a tale of two cities: Sydney and New York, and is sure to please any listener.
The first of the two cds, which is also subtitled Little Cloud, contains eight songs dedicated to the city of Sydney, whilst the second, subtitled The Apple’s Eye, contains the songs that were written for New York, during lead singer Tim Freedman’s stay in the Big Apple.
The songs on this album contain a quality about them that is reminiscent of one of their previous albums, Eternal Nightcap.
The songs allow you to sit back, relax and get lost in another world as you listen to poetic lyrics such as: "All the white horses are dragged below the sea/Fighting for life in there/Some of them we’ll see rise again…" from White Horses, or "When fondness makes the heart grow absent/I gotta find an orbit a little closer to the ground/When fondness in my heart is absent/I’m in awe of the sabotage within" from Fondness makes the Heart grow Absent.
The whimsical lyrics of the songs on this double album engage the listener, and reflect back to us our lives and our perceptions of the world. They tell stories of dreams, of relationships gone wrong, and of life in general.
The tracks reveal raw emotions felt by each and every one of us. They are at times self depreciating, such as the lyrics of Second Best that state "don’t you hesitate to call me, when only second best will do".
It is The Whitlam's ability to write such poetic and raw lyrics that has enabled the band to connect with its audience and made them a hit across the nation. This coveted ability among rock stars will no doubt assist them in succeeding in the UK when they launch the album there later this year.
In a nutshell, this album is sure to please die-hard Whitlams fans, and will capture new fans for the band.
Little Cloud is an album that exceeds the listener’s high expectations of quality music, and is well deserving of a five star review.
