University accommodation in good hands

With hundreds of adolescents to watch over, John and Lorraine Sissons are no ordinary couple.

Little did they know that after 27 years of managing hotels and apartments, they would end up as managers of a student accommodation complex in Sippy Downs called Varsity Apartments.

They have become “adopted parents” to students from the University of the Sunshine Coast and local TAFE institutes, living in 504 apartments on-site.

“For many students, it’s their first time away from home, so we stand back at a distance and make sure they’re having a safe and fun time,” John said.

Originally from Auckland, New Zealand, the married couple of 43 years had no hesitation in their decision to take on management positions at the apartments, two years ago.

“We like a challenge,” John said.

Each apartment at Varsity is privately owned, so as manager, Lorraine said she had a responsibility to make sure the investments were well looked after.

“Whatever we do, we treat it as our own,” she said.

“We’re looking after properties so it’s our job to keep them up to scratch.

“All we ask of the students is to do what’s expected of them.”

With the help of their professional team, John and Lorraine do everything from liaising with owners, body corporates and developers, to mowing the lawn.

“I like relaxing on the lawn mower,” John said. “That’s where I think up my marketing strategies.”

Having four children of their own and seven grandchildren, the couple are well tuned in to the wants and needs of the students.

Carissa Bellham, 18, moved from Brisbane to the Varsity Apartments two months ago, to be close to the University of the Sunshine Coast, where she is studying a Bachelor of Design and Marketing.

Looking back on her decision, Carissa said the facilities drew her in.

"I found it modern, cheaper and it had great facilities, such as volleyball courts," she said.

Since moving in, Carissa said she had become involved in the organised events at Varsity.

"I play in the Buderim Tavern sponsored volleyball night, and the organised touch football team that play at Maroochydore on Monday nights," she said.

Carissa said she was pleased with the treatment from the professional staff at Varsity.

"They are extremely helpful and always willing to say g'day when I pass them while walking around the apartments," she said.

"And I love how they make their way round in the buggies."
