Underbelly

Melbourne’s infamous and violent gang wars from 1994 to 2001 have been brought to life by Channel Nine’s new smash hit Underbelly.

Underbelly, which began airing in early February, has brought the chaotic murderous actions of Melbourne’s underworld into living rooms across the nation. Underbelly has already generated controversy as a court injunction stopped the program from being broadcast in Melbourne, due to a gangland case that is currently before Victorian courts.

Underbelly’s plot begins with known underworld figures the Moran family, Mick Gatto and Carl Williams (Australia’s most infamous serial killer), vying to control the streets of Melbourne through intimidation, violence and gruesome execution style killings. It is apparent early in the story that the gangsters - as they are known - show no respect for law and order and will kill anyone that hinders their goals of being the kings of the underworld.

Underbelly is an explosive series that will shock most Australians, who can expect to see an abundance of violence, drug use and production, betrayal, corruption and tit-for-tat killings. The Victorian Police Force is left struggling to control members of such a dark, impenetrable underworld that sees itself as the law of  Melbourne’s streets.
