Theft and property damage a concern in Sippy Downs

Constant damage to cars and property and general mess along University Way and connecting streets has sparked concern from local police and residents.

Property and car damage have been increasing along University Way and adjoining Columbia Street, along which two student accommodation sites exist.

The damage to cars and property theft has been reported to the Sippy Downs local police, who say they have an ongoing investigation into the matter.

Police say they suspect a group of youths aged 14 to 18 are responsible for the majority of the damage and theft.

Officer Mark Burke said the youths had organised a game which involves stealing items from people’s cars and front yards.

“The people involved in the crimes centralise in the lake area of Sippy Downs,” Officer Burke said.

“We suspect that they meet back at the tower off Spring Hill to compare their [stolen] goodies.”

Officer Burke said the stolen items were discarded afterwards, indicating that the youths are stealing for entertainment rather than money.

University student Duane Miletic’s car has been damaged twice this week while parked on the street in Varsity court.

“On Thursday night my side mirror got ripped off deliberately,” Mr Miletic said.

“And on Sunday night my personalised number plate was ripped off, bolts and all.”

Mr Miletic also said four of his friends’ cars had been damaged when parked on the street.

President of Sippy Downs and District Community Association Murray Lions said the general mess in the area had been noticed by the association.

“We’ve noticed broken bottles and mess lying around in University way,” Mr Lions said.

“However it is difficult to say who is responsible.”

Resident of Columbia Street Jerida Cuskelly said she was aware of the increased risk of damage to property in the area.

“We always park in the garage because I’ve heard of other people’s cars being keyed and damaged when they’re left on the street,” Ms Cuskelly said.

“A few of my friends have had items stolen from their front yards.”

Ms Cuskelly said she hoped the police were successful in their investigation, and that the damage and theft stops.
