Martin Scorsese’s The Departed (2006) is an action packed mobster movie set in Boston’s underwo
rld revolving around organised crime, corruption, betrayal and justice.
The Departed was released on DVD in early April.
Despite a high level of bloodshed and extreme coarse language, which is appropriate for the genre, at times the excessive cussing overshadows the script.
The Departed boasts an all-star cast including: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin.
The Boston Police Department have been trying to capture the kingpin of the underworld and organised crime, Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) for a long time.
But Costello’s carefully constructed complex network of people working for him ensures he is always step ahead.
Good cop William Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is undercover for the Boston Police Department and corrupt bad cop Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is Costello’s carefully planted mole.
Costigan tries to expose Costello, but Sullivan keeps tipping Costello off.
Costello soon realises there is a mole and the police realise they have a corrupt cop.
Costigan and Sullivan face a dangerous game of cat and mouse, as each must expose the other to stay alive.
To add a twist to this game, they also share the same love interest.
The actors were well suited to their roles, convincingly portraying their characters and complimenting each other.
As the complex plot unfolds, viewers connect to the characters and are taken on a wild journey.
The Departed has no fairytale ending and is full of twists and surprises, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats.
But the movie fails to answer some questions, leaving viewers puzzled and some avenues unexplored.
