Sunshine Coast cricket - First grade one day final

On Sunday February 3, Caboolture Snakes First Grade took on the Hinterland Hawks in the one day final at Grant Road, Caboolture.

There were many supporters in attendance, including lower grade players as well as local news crews for this tremendous occasion. After a few early morning showers the game started on time with the Hawks batting first. They got off to a flying start making their way to 1/148 after 28 overs. The major run scorers were Matt Cahill with 73 and Steve Bemrose with 66.

However some tight Snakes bowling triggered a Hawks collapse, and they were bundled out for 198 in the 45th over. Andrew Schablon was Caboolture’s main destroyer with 4/26 from eight overs, and Angus Alexander supported him well with 3/24 from 10 overs.

Caboolture began their innings with a solid 46-run opening stand, and were 3/99 at the half way stage of the chase when Brad Teske was dismissed for 24. This paved the way for what would prove to be a match-winning 64-run partnership between Schablon (70) and 17-year-old Ryan Baker.

Towards the end the crowd became more involved with local lower grader Ben Steinhardt attempting to aid the opposition by returning a ball from the boundary, but only succeeding in producing a wayward throw (to say the least). Rather than ending up in the nearest player’s hands the ball came to rest at fine leg’s feet. Even the opposition players saw the funny side of it.

In the 44th over Caboolture reached their target with Baker hitting the winning runs and ending unbeaten on 43. The celebrations undoubtedly went through the night. It is the first piece of silverware the club hopes to win for the season. Well done fellas!
