Tiger Woods made the game of golf famous, now 24-year-old Craig Davis is attempting to follow in his footsteps.

Awarded the 2007 Sunshine Coast Tour Rookie of the Year, Davis held his first golf club at the age of three.

Beginning his competitive career at about 12 years-old, Davis moved from South Australia to the Sunshine Coast in 2006 to pursue his career in golf.

The move to the Sunshine Coast allowed Davis to fine tune his game, the famous Sunshine Coast weather giving him more time to practice.

Originally from Mount Gambier, a small country town in South Australia, the move also increased Davis’ competitive range.

“Being in a much more populated area has helped by allowing me to have stronger competition and access to better facilities,” he said.

The access to better facilities has resulted in Davis performing extremely well in the tours he has competed in. Davis has finished in the top 10 in his past 14 competitions and only looks to be improving.

“Next year I hope to lead the Von Nida Tour Money List by the end of the year and then look to head over to the Asian Tour Qualifying School where I will hope to play well enough to gain access to play the Asian Tour full time in 2009.”

Inspired by his father who played golf for many years, Davis also looks to Greg Norman and Tiger Woods as golfing inspirations.

“[Greg Norman and Tiger Woods have] set new levels for all players to achieve,” Davis said.

Players are working harder than ever to achieve their best as the game of golf evolves. There continues to be an increasing amount of changes in technology, popularity and emphasis on physical training.

In recent years Australians’ interest in golf has increased due to the success of Australian golfers such as Adam Scott and Aaron Baddeley. Because of this advancements in technology have followed suit.

Golf clubs and golf balls have advanced considerably, with more light weight materials used and the dimples in golf balls changing depth to increase the speed and length of the hit.

As well as advancements in technology and training techniques, Davis must also focus on his physical fitness.

“From a player perspective there is much more emphasis on physical conditioning such as gym work, nutrition and physiotherapy to help the players perform better.”

With his dedication and sincere love of the game, Davis’ future looks very bright. No doubt, people will soon be reading about Australia’s great golfers Greg Norman, Adam Scott and Craig Davis.
