Nearly two years after Stargate SG-1 was cancelled MGM has released a follow up to the series with the direct-to-dvd movie Stargate: Continuum.
The previous Stagate movie, Ark of Truth, seemed to disappoint a lot of fans, but there is no doubt Continuum will wow viewers as one of the greatest SG-1 stories ever written.
Ark of Truth felt very much like a television episode. Continuum on the other hand has all the hallmarks of a larger production including impressive outdoor sequences, a large cast and grand storyline.
The story starts while SG-1 is attending the execution of Ba’al, the last of the Goa’uld system lords. When some of the team starts to disappear, the remaining members rush back to the Stargate to return to Earth, only to find that their own history has been changed. It is then up to Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder), Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) to convince authorities what has happened and fix the timeline.
Continuum also marks the return of Richard Dean Anderson as Major General Jack O’Neill, which is certainly a major plus for the franchise. Having the "band back together" gives the story a true Stargate feel and should remind fans of the early days of SG-1.
Stargate: Continuum successfully combines a ten year franchise into a relatively stand alone story. The film is designed largely for newcomers and is easy to understand for those who may be unfamiliar with the series.
Overall, the movie gives exactly what Stargate fans have been wanting since the show ended in 2007.
