Palmwoods take points in season opener

Palmwoods 3B Grade plundered their way to victory in the first game of the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association 2008/09 season, with a first innings victory over an unfortunate Yandina team.

Conditions were perfect at Thompson Oval, Yandina Showground for day one, with a fair pitch and lightning quick outfield certain to produce some good cricket.

Both captains were happy with the result of the toss, with Palmwoods electing to bat.

Young Jake Kerr got Yandina off to the perfect start with a wicket in the first over, but it was only to turn pear-shaped for the home side.

Although dismissing three of the top five batsmen for less than 5 runs, a fantastic partnership between Jamie Ryan (65 runs) and opener Nick Bateman (157 runs) put Yandina out of the game.

By the end of the day Palmwoods had made 325, but bad light stopped Yandina commencing their innings.

That proved unfortunate for Yandina, with a few days of rain prior to day two (and a junior match before it) turning the pitch into a batsman’s nightmare.

Yandina struggled in the challenging conditions, with only two players managing a score in double figures.

Zac Luke and Jamie Ryan were the standout bowlers, each taking two wickets with an economy rate of less than one run per over.

Yandina were dismissed just after the tea break for only 50, allowing Palmwoods to enforce the follow-on and push for outright victory.

But Yandina captain Bruce Jones-Walker proved the thorn in Palmwoods’ side with a gritty 36 at the top of the order, seeing off the new ball and a potential innings defeat.

The match ended due to bad light after 31 overs with Yandina at 4/80.

Palmwoods continue their season against Buderim next week, while Yandina take on Maroochydore Gold.
