Many skin care products claim to be natural but contain harmful chemicals, so medical herbalist Sharn Nulty founded Byron Botanicals and developed her own natural skin care range.
Ms Nulty established her company called Byron Botanicals in 2002 in Mullumbimby, Byron Bay, New South Wales.
Her skin care products have expanded to the Sunshine Coast.
Ms Nulty is a medical herbalist, remedial massage therapist and has a degree in Human Health Services. She has manufactured herbal creams for seven years.
Ms Nulty said she was motivated to start Byron Botanicals while working in her clinic, as many of her clients had skin problems.
Ms Nulty said they mentioned other natural skin care products on the market and told her they were very expensive and they did not believe they would work.
“Many skin care products are laden with chemicals and also tested on animals,” she said.
Ms Nulty said many products portrayed they were natural but only had a few natural ingredients and the rest were chemical based.
“Some products are all natural but have quite high amounts of preservatives to prolong their shelf life,” she said.
She said although the preservatives were natural, they were not good for skin in high doses.
Ms Nulty said many natural and synthetic products had herbs that were not effective in the quantities used or were a fad.
She said they were “not based on any traditional or scientific research”.
This led Ms Nulty to produce her own range of everyday skin care products that would help peoples’ skin care needs.
Ms Nulty said “I … already had training in preparing creams and salves as part of my Diploma in Herbal Medicine and I already knew many of the herbs used for different skin conditions.”
Ms Nulty said her products were all natural, were not tested on animals, had no animal products used in their preparation, had no sodium lauryl sulphate or any other chemicals, were organic and biodynamic where possible and could be manufactured to suit the needs of customers in special cases.
Ms Nulty said she produced the products in small batches to ensure they were fresh and had minimal use of natural preservatives.
She said her products were “produced by a herbalist who knows what herbs are effective and are supported by traditional or scientific research.”
Unlike other skin care products, the Byron Botanicals range is natural and affordable.
