Glenview residents have signed a petition asking for a new footpath to improve safety, ease traffic congestion and encourage healthy activity.
The footpath would be from Old Gympie Road to Glenview State Primary School.
Sunshine Coast Regional Council division 1 councillor Anna Grosskreutz said young people from Glenview [State] Primary School wanted a footpath so they could walk or cycle to school.
“It’s good for mums and dads to walk their children to school,” she said.
The footpath would mean fewer vehicles on the road, which would benefit the environment.
Cr Grosskreutz said the footpath would free up traffic congestion on Glenview Road.
Aside from safety and environmental benefits, the footpath would also encourage exercise.
Glenview State Primary School’s principal Deborah Crotty said parents were too worried about safety and so they drove their children to school.
She said as a result the traffic congestion was terrible.
“It will enable them to travel to school more safely,” Mrs Crotty said.
She said the footpath would help with the traffic congestion.
Parent Mandy Kertai said she was concerned about safety.
“There [are] too many blind corners. No way. It’s too unsafe,” she said.
Mrs Kertai said the footpath would make Glenview more of a community and not as isolated.
Mrs Kertai’s 12-year-old son who is a student at the school helped collect the 145 signatures for the petition.
Mrs Crotty said she thought it was excellent he saw it as a safety issue and thought proactively about what he could do about it.
“I think it’s important for community members to be proactive in helping their community with issues,” Mrs Crotty said.
