Don’t let her see me cry: A mother’s story is the autobiography of Helen Barnacle, who was sentenced to the longest term for a woman in Victoria for a drug-related offence of 15 years.
The readers of the novel will feel unexpected sympathy for Helen and her newborn child, Ali.
Helen’s life depends on Ali; it is her only reason for living. Ali gives her mother strength, hope and courage as a character.
The novel begins with Helen's life on the street, includes how she was able to keep Ali in the jail for three years and then the heartbreak of giving her up.
Don’t let her see me cry: A mother’s story has an uplifting ending and leaves the reader walking away thinking that you can achieve anything in life, no matter what obstacles you face.
It is a must read novel.
It was published in 2001 by Bantam Books.
