The Caboolture Snakes have secured back-to-back Sunshine Coast Cricket Association one day cricket titles in a thrilling final against Maroochydore Swans on Sunday February 8, 2009.
Caboolture, chasing Maroochydore’s modest total of 123, looked to be in a comfortable position at 1/86 before losing 8/25 and staring down the barrel of defeat.
Caboolture’s heroes were renowned bowlers Matt Dobbie (4 not out) and Jamie Murphy (9 not out) who combined for the match-winning 13 run partnership.
Murphy, who had batted only twice before in the one day season, said he just kept telling his partner to ‘keep his head down’.
“We knew we had plenty of overs left,” Murphy said.
Dobbie was the final batsman to walk out to the middle, and after playing a few tentative shots became used to the pitch conditions.
“It wasn’t doing much out there but you knew if you played straight you’d be right,” Dobbie said.
Caboolture captain Dane Adams, who smashed 58 off 53 balls at the top of the innings, said he thought it was all over when Dobbie strode out.
“I’ll tell you right now I was out the back kicking rocks around,” Adams said.
Adams thanked the intense support of the home crowd for getting the side to victory.
Swans captain Jimmy Aspinall said the players from both sides deserved to be proud of their performances for the match.
“It was a really good game it was a great final,” Aspinall said.
“More than anything I think the bowlers bowled really well and they can be proud of themselves.”
He lamented on the lack of application in Maroochydore’s batting with only two batsmen scoring over 20 runs.
“We didn’t bat our full 50 (overs) and that’s a cardinal sin,” he said.
Aspinall was pleased with the way his team fought back in the dying stages led by strike bowler Paul Henricks who took 4/21.
“We can be pretty proud that we, in the face of a lot of good cricket from Caboolture, fought right to the end and nearly stole it,” he said.
Both teams now look towards the end of two-day competition. Caboolture and Maroochydore are first and second on the table respectively.
