Style Wars is a documentary which follows the development of hip hop in New York and the rise and fall of subway graffiti during the early 1980s.
The film’s producers Henry Chalfant and Tony Silver track graffiti writers to give an insight into the graffiti subculture and the art which covered the city’s trains from the late 1970s to mid 1980s.
The documentary focuses on the battles these writers have amongst themselves, with the Metropolitan Transit Authority, graffiti police, Mayor Ed Koch and the public. The writers originate from a variety of backgrounds and the film offers a unique viewpoint into what makes them tick.
The re-released DVD includes a second disk with extras including 20 years later where-are-they-now interviews, outtakes and additional photographs.
