The post-apocalyptic world depicted in Mad Max2: The Road Warrior is an ominous warning for the future of humanity from the perspective of 1981.
But today it shows the viewer a likely outcome if the out-of-control consumption of oil is not curbed.
As often happens, SF films attempt to predict the consequences of human behaviour and how society is altered under tumultuous changes. Mad Max 2 offers a glimmer of hope. It predicts that people forced to exist under dire circumstances will cling to the remnants of a civil society when faced with a ‘survival of the fittest’ mentality.
The acting in this film is a touch overly dramatic, as is the musical score. But Mel Gibson as the road warrior, the anti- hero who reluctantly draws the outlaws away so the community can escape, is engaging.
Although Gibson’s character is the strong silent type, there is one line that he delivers which is memorable. “You wanna get outta here, you talk to me.” It’s just as unforgettable as Arnie’s “Come with me if you want to live” or Clint’s “Go ahead punk, make my day”.
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior is an action driven, SF, road adventure film that portrays a desolate future for consumer driven societies. The film is of its time, but that doesn’t mean it’s not relevant or enjoyable now.
