Stomp the Yard is a movie about the journey of DJ (Columbus Short), a young brother from the ‘hood, who goes to Truth University and joins a fraternity that is fighting to win the National Step Championships, a hip-hop/rap style dance-off competition.

There is a lot of energy and plenty of angst in this movie. From seeing his brother die to moving to another state and falling for the wrong girl (Meagan Good), DJ’s journey is riddled with conflict.

The tone of the movie is very ghetto to begin with. There is so much noise and movement going on that it is a very powerful opening that throws the viewer right into the conflict. However, from here the story rushes into the next scene and we find DJ going to Truth University, leaving a few holes in the story.

At first the movie doesn’t really show why DJ is at University when he clearly doesn’t want to be there. But looking back at the end of the movie there are a few hints along the way, although they are not very obvious to begin with.

The choreography is excellent and will hold even the toughest dance critic's interest. Some of the moves are incredible and the group dances are timed to perfection.
