Gilmore Girls' final farewell

The seventh and final season of Gilmore Girls, now available on DVD, tries to solve many of the dilemmas that have been plaguing the characters throughout the series.
Who will Lorelai end up with – Luke, the flannel-shirt-wearing cafe owner, or Christopher, her daughter’s biological father? Will Rory, Lorelai’s daughter, sacrifice her hard work at Yale to marry her trust fund boyfriend or pursue her dream of becoming a journalist?
The series delightfully depicts the joy and absurdity of small town life in Stars Hollow. This fast-paced, witty drama sits firmly in the chick flick genre, but is an intelligently written series full of droll observations and well drawn characterisations that only occasionally turn to schmaltz.
All the characters are well-developed and enjoyable to watch even if their main purpose is to be annoying, overbearing or ridiculous.
The show is full of popular cultural references and observations that are both funny and relevant, but some are a little too specific to the US to be fully understood.
Lauren Graham’s portrayal of Lorelai Gilmore is excellent. The rest of the cast have supported her and the series brilliantly - from old hands like Edward Herrmann to fresh new faces such as Alexis Bledel.
The end of the series means it’s goodbye to the Gilmores and the eccentric townsfolk of Stars Hollow. It’s a shame to see the end of this well-written family show.
