Day Watch is a Russian fantasy thriller that offers a different twist on the vampire legend.

This film is the follow up to Night Watch and revolves around the mythological tale of the Chalk of Fate, which allows the holder of the chalk to rewrite history.

While the film does appear to be intended to appeal to Western audiences, there is some insight into the cultural significance of Russian mythology and fairytales.

The protagonist, Anton, is a night watch operative who is stuck in the middle of an uneasy truce between the powers of ‘light’ and ‘dark’. Anton struggles to save his son, Yegor, from the powers of darkness.

At his birthday party, Yegor initiates an attack on Moscow leading to the total destruction of the city. Anton must try to acquire the Chalk of Fate so he can rewrite history, thereby saving his son, Moscow and the rest of the world.

Although the plot is corny at times and the characters are rather stereotypical, with a few too many clichés, the film is still enjoyable to watch. The film draws in the audience, leading viewers to care about the characters and what happens to them.
